Welcome to Fashionable History!
My name is Loren Miller and I am currently pursing my Ph.D. in history at American University where I hold the Patrick Clendenen Fellow in Women’s and Gender History. I obtained my Masters degree in history from American in December 2010. As an undergraduate I studied anthropology and Spanish at Skidmore College. At present, I am performing my dissertation research on the military’s use of glamour as a recruitment tool for servicewomen during World War II.
I am certified in three fields: early American, modern American, and public history. My research interests include modern American history, women’s and gender history, cultural history, and visual and material culture, specifically fashion history.
I have also been through the Public History Program at American, which provided me with a theoretical and practical background in the field. My relevant coursework included a Public History Seminar and Practicum, Visual and Material Culture, Digital History, Oral History, and a course called How History Matters, which discussed how history could be presented to the community effectively.
Presently, I am a teaching assistant at American where I am responsible for grading coursework and leading class discussions. However, I also have professional experience in public history. Before I entered the program, I was employed as the Development Coordinator the United States Capitol Historical Society. More recently, I worked on exhibitions at Arlington House, the Robert E. Lee Memorial and the National Building Museum, as well as individually curating exhibits at the United States Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces and the Securities Exchange Commission Historical Society. Additionally, I have experience working with collections at institutions such as the Montclair Historical Society and the Women in Military Service for America Memorial.
